Communication technology changes rapidly. It's vital that you wait until your USAGE time is near before deciding which or how many technologies to use. Allow time to learn how to operate your new gear and makes sure Greg Moore is the one who specifys, supplies and installs your radio gear. SSB/Ham radio Terrestrial HF radios are still the boaters or ranchers main long range communications tool but its being used less every year. You can use them inside a warm cabin. It's how you call the coast guard. Don't use your cell phone. Setting up the radio to transmit DSS emergency position will allow the unit to transmit your position during an entire emergency while you help others. Its still a must for boaters and I have a license and patience to show you how. Gorden West has a class for those who like to have a little fun while your learning.
You can get weather fax, email and voice telephone calls over the ham and SSB radios. However the antenna installation is expensive and should be left to experts and done without compromise. You don't need to know morse code any more to use ham radio.
Downside, sometimes the atmosphere interferes with all bandwidths. Audio clarity and transmissions fail or fade. Power supply must be stiff and ground plane ratio cant be compromised. Rf radiation is 150 watts and has spurious emmissions and harmonics that interfere with things.
Sat Phones You phone home, send and recieve email, browse the internet and soon receive Tv broadcast on mini screens. This is a convienant way to have back up communications and a regular phone number for loved ones to call. You can also send video and make internet calls that others can see you and hear you. You have a monthly subscription charge and usuage fee of about $1.00/min for this clear and reliable technology. The biggest antenna wins in sat coms.
Downside: High cost of usage, gear and proper installation. Must be used outside if using handheld antenna. Subject to govt and business agencies. Records and unwanted calls.
Plan for a disaster You should always have an emergency communication plan in place for man over board and abandon ship life rafts. Solar, hand powered, spare batteries are a must. Crew should be trained.
The VHF or common radios can only talk to who they can see line or site usually within 10-15 miles tops. Do not rely on cell phones or entirely on a VHF for AT-Sea emergency. Do not rely on cell phones around steep mountains or islands. Always have a back up way of communicating.
